The Royal Dragon
Synonymous with Wales for more than 500 years, the Royal Dragon is one of the most prominent and celebrated of all the Royal Tudor Beasts.
The Royal Dragon has represented both Wales and the Tudor family since the days of Henry VIII’s great-grandfather Sir Owen Tudor.
Adopted by Henry VII following his victory at Bosworth Field, the Royal Dragon combined the Tudor colours of green and white with the dragon’s red.
One of the most recognisable symbols in British heraldry, the iconic dragon officially became the flag of Wales in 1959.
